Los llanos

Los Llanos is a region of northern South America, shares between Venezuela and Colombia in the Orinoco basin. It is considered one of the most important ecosystems in the world with two distinct seasons, the rainy season and the dry season; It is characterized by vast savannas, its climate is intertropical savannah (in the Koppen climate classification, being hot and humid, except in the high plains with mild climate).

With high temperatures in general, and placed inland it possesses no coastlines. The lowest temperatures are recorded in the rainy season, so in August usually recorded lowest temperature in January, but the annual temperature range is generally insignificant.

The economic importance of the plains is that it is a region suitable for ranching and farming. There is also important oil activity in the Venezuelan states of Anzoátegui, Apure, Barinas, Guárico and Monagas, and the Colombian departments of Arauca, Casanare, Vichada and Meta.

In Venezuela, the plains are formed by the states of Apure, Barinas, Bolivar, Portuguesa, Cojedes, Guarico, Anzoategui and Monagas. The Venezuelan plains are divided into three regions:

• Western Plains: Comprised of Apure, Barinas and Portuguesa, these are the most commonly identified as Venezuelan plains.

• Central Plains: This plains region is located in the states of Guarico and Cojedes, in the center of the country.

• eastern plains: Consists of much of Anzoategui and Monagas states.
